You aren't actually competing with anyone but yourself. Faulkner had a line for that, "Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself."

If you keep comparing yourselves to others, you'll just become a defeatist. For a while, forget about other people, and remember that you don't create art purely to be better than someone else, but because some force inside you compels you to be creative.

Good points! I agree with everything you said but the defeatist part. It's all in how you take it... .once you understand that your talent is yours, and their talent is theirs, nothing is wrong with wanting to surpass them! ^^ Besides it's goals and inspration that are needed to push you forward, even if they be other people... though it hurts me whenever a kid comes up to me saying how much better I am... or anyone else is for that matter, than them... and how jealous they are. I hate that line. Don't say I envy you, I'm hopeless, just say I haven't surpassed you yet. and then your skill will soar faster than you ever imagined! ^^

I'm glad to see someone else that understands art isn't made for just getting attention!
